Arab countries welcomed on Monday the United States’ decision to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Yemen’s Foreign Ministry said that the move was a “step in the right direction because it will have a positive impact on regional and international security and peace.”
It said that the designation will push the Iranian regime to alter its policies and cease its destabilizing behavior in the region and meddling in the affairs of Arab countries, reported the Saba news agency.
The legitimate Yemeni government hoped that the designation will help “restore stability in the region,” calling on the international community to exert more pressure on Iran to “force it to respect its commitments as a member state of the United Nations.”
Bahrain welcomed on Monday the designation with its Foreign Ministry stressing the importance of this decision in addressing the dangerous role played by the IRGC in the region.
It said the IRGC was a “destabilizing force and a main contributor to the spread of violence and terrorism across the Middle East and the entire world.”
It reiterated its appreciation for the relentless efforts of the United States in confronting Iran’s “hostile and terrorist activities and its negative interference in the internal affairs of the region’s countries.”
It also expresses its hope for resolute and effective action by the international community to pressure Tehran to halt its support for terrorist organizations and militias, to respect the independence and sovereignty of states and to immediately stop undermining regional and international peace and security.
In contrast, Damascus criticized the “reckless” US move against the IRGC, which has been one of its main allies during the eight years of the Syrian war.
An official source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that the US move was a “badge of honor and recognition of Iran’s pioneering and important role in the resistance axis against American hegemony and arrogance and the Zionist expansion against the countries and peoples of the region.”
The source said that the designation was a “flagrant” violation of Iran’s sovereignty.
“The IRGC is the Iranian government’s primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign,” US President Donald Trump said in announcing the designation on Monday.
It is the first time the United States has formally labelled another country’s military a terrorist group.
The designation “makes crystal clear the risks of conducting business with, or providing support to, the IRGC,” Trump said. “If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism.”
The United States has already blacklisted dozens of entities and people for affiliations with the IRGC, but not the organization as a whole.
