Qatar is reportedly considering an offer from Iran to host teams participating in the 2022 World Cup.

The head of the organizing committee told AFP on Monday that no decision has been taken yet but the matter “remains under discussion.”

“This is part of the operational plan, but obviously it will have to be done with FIFA,” chief organiser Hassan Al Thawadi told AFP when asked whether teams could be based in Iran.

Iran had previously offered to host teams who will play in the World Cup in Qatar, which starts in just over four years’ time.

Al Thawadi added that Qatar had received “numerous proposals from countries with regard to hosting teams” around the time of the World Cup.

Following the Arab boycott of Qatar, Doha resorted to Iran in commercial acts, which will be undoubtedly affected following severe US sanctions against Iranian oil and financial sectors.
